Gay Republicans say they’re talking to Trump’s transition team

Gay Republicans are claiming that they’re making inroads with Trump’s team and that they have a “unique opportunity” to advance LGBT rights.

Gregory Angelo, president of the Log Cabin Republicans, says that he has been speaking with members of Trump’s team several times a week, BuzzFeed reports. Tyler Deaton, strategic adviser for the American Unity Fund, and Chris Barron of LGBT for Trump, also said they have been talking “regularly” with Trump’s transition team.

Deaton says that his organization has been briefing Trump staffers on legal issues pending in the Justice Department and other federal agencies. “The fact that these conversations are happening, and [their position] isn’t just a forgone conclusion is a great sign.”

Trump officials did not confirm that these conversations have been taking place.

A Human Rights Campaign (HRC) spokesperson could not confirm if the organization had been talking with Trump staffers. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said they have been having “informal conversations” with Trump staff. The the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) says they have not reached out to the Trump Administration.

Deaton said that Republican lawmakers are “excited” to support LGBT rights.
