Dozens of Iowa high school students walk out over trans student’s right to use the restroom

Approximately 60 students at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa walked out of classes over a transgender student’s right to use the correct restroom.

Students split into two groups. One supported the transgender girl’s right to use the women’s room while the other opposed.

No disciplinary action will be taken. The peaceful demonstration lasted about 15 minutes.

“I was very proud of how the students peacefully conducted themselves. It’s important to us to let students express their opinions as long as it’s done in a respectful way,” Council Bluffs Community School District Superintendent Vicki Murillo said.

Murillo said the protest happened after a cisgender girl complained about using the same restroom as a transgender student.

The district follows the Obama-era guidance for supporting transgender students that includes allowing them to use the restroom that corresponds with their gender identity. They have no plans to change their inclusive policy.
