Lawbreaking anti-gay county clerk Kim Davis loses reelection

Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, who spent several days in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, lost her bid for reelection.

Davis, who switched to the Republican Party before the election, faced Democrat Elwood Caudill. Caudill won 54% of the approximately 7,800 votes cast in the race.

Davis infamously turned away David Ermold and his fiancé, David Moore, in 2015 when they applied for a marriage license and spent time in jail for refusing to do her job. Ermold announced he would run against Davis, but lost the primary race to Ermold.

Ermold alleged Caudill was worse than Davis and said he hoped his former nemesis would win reelection. He said that Caudill is also homophobic and uses anti-gay slurs while courting LGBT voters.

“I just want him to lose. I would rather Kim Davis win,” Ermold told the Associated Press in September.

“At least Kim Davis has the integrity to stand up for what she believes in. Elwood Caudill is a liar.”
