Taylor Swift calls out a Republican for opposing LGBT rights

Singer Taylor Swift told her fans that she won’t be voting for a Republican because of their anti-LGBT positions.

Writing on Instagram, Swift discussed the U.S. Senate race in her home state of Tennessee, where Representative Marsha Blackburn (R) is running against former Governor Phil Bredesen (D).

“I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country,” Swift wrote. “I believe in the fight for LGBT rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG.”

“Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn,” Swift continued. “As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn.”

Swift cited Blackburn’s record in Congress, which she said “appalls and terrifies” her.

“She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values.”

She then said that she would be voting for Bredesen, and told her followers to register to vote.

RealClearPolitics‘s rolling poll average shows Blackburn ahead of Bredesen 47.4% to 45.4%.
