Gus Kenworthy breaks thumb & jokes he won’t have to shake Pence’s hand

Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy tweeted that he broke his thumb at a practice yesterday, but he doesn’t seem too bothered by it.

He said it won’t stop him from competing, but it “does prevent me from shaking Pence’s hand so… Silver linings!”

Kenworthy and figure skater Adam Rippon, who are both gay, have been publicly critical of the U.S. Olympic Team’s appointed leader, Mike Pence.

“I think it’s not the person I would have expected, and I think it sends mixed messages because this is the first time we’re seeing out U.S. Olympic athletes competing in the Winter Olympics, and then we have someone leading the delegation that doesn’t support that, and doesn’t support the LGBT community, and has spoken against it. I think it doesn’t send the right message,” Kenworthy told USA Today.

He and Rippon also met up at the Olympics and sent a message to Pence.

Kenworthy will be competing in the men’s ski slopestyle events this Sunday. He can still ski, his routine involves grabbing his skis and it may have to change.
