Why did Fox News pull this racist, homophobic column?

Yesterday I wrote about a column written by Fox News Vice President John Moody, complaining that the U.S. Olympic Team isn’t white and straight enough to win.

“Unless it’s changed overnight, the motto of the Olympics, since 1894, has been ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger,'” Moody, who is identified in his bio as “Executive Editor for Fox News,” wrote. “It appears the U.S. Olympic Committee would like to change that to ‘Darker, Gayer, Different.’ If your goal is to win medals, that won’t work.”

Today, following the link to the article turns up an error message.

A representative told Variety that the column didn’t go through the “proper vetting process.”

While there were factual errors in the column – Moody incorrectly asserts that the U.S. Olympic Team is more black and gay than “the general population” – when has that ever bothered Fox News?

And his ideas were outrageous. For example, he wrote that the Olympic Team had picked athletes based on their race and sexuality, even though there was no evidence of this.

But he has written so many other outrageous columns in the past, like several that said that feminists and Democrats condone female genital mutilation, a rare (in the U.S.) and illegal practice that no Democrat or feminist is trying to promote or legalize.

The only line he may have crossed was getting a lot of negative attention for Fox News on a pretty patriotic topic: the U.S. Olympic Team.
