Transgender woman dies 9 days after being found unconscious on NYC sidewalk

A transgender woman found unconscious in Midtown Manhattan in April died Thursday from her injuries.

The 59-year-old woman was found outside a Five Guys restaurant around 10:30 p.m. April 25, NBC 4 New York reports. When she first arrived at Bellevue Hospital Center with a head injury, medical workers did not suspect criminal activity. So police didn’t learn about the incident until the woman died.

Police said that the woman’s death did not appear to be self-inflicted or caused by a fall and are investigating her death as a homicide. No suspects have been identified.

City Councilperson Corey Johnson told Pix 11 he was “saddened and angered” by news of the woman’s death.

“There must be zero tolerance for acts of violence, particularly against transgender individuals, who are disproportionately targeted by hate crimes and discrimination,” Johnson said.

The woman’s name has been not yet been released, pending notification of her family. If her death is ruled a homicide, it will be the 10th reported murder of a transgender woman this year.

Police are accepting tips about this case via Crime Stoppers 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visiting http://www.nypdcrimestoppers.com, or texting 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577.
