Mississippi I Am (2012)

Mississippi I Am (2012)

Director Harriet Hirshorn, Katherine Linton

Genre Documentary

Year 2012

Actors Lance Bass, Constance McMillen

Description In 2006, 'NSync's Lance Bass came out publicly as gay. Once the "most beloved son" of his home state of Mississippi, he was instantly rejected and his hopes that Mississippi could ever embrace change were dashed. Then in 2010 he heard the story of Constance McMillen, 18, who was suing her school for denying her the right to go to the prom with her girlfriend. Something was shifting even in the most socially conservative states in America. MISSISSIPPI: I AM, examines the relatively new battle on the part of primarily young LGBT people to bring gay civil rights and visibility out in the open and beyond division.

I saw this and it was very good. I hated racist whites watching this. Good acting by Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe. I was laughing when Gene was beating up Brad Dourif at the barber shop because Brad beat up his wife Frances McDormand because he didn't like her talking to Gene. Gene cut him with a shaving blade while he was sitting in a chair waiting to get his face shaved by the barber LOL. Gene told the barber to leave so he could shave Brad's face while Brad had the towel over his eyes LOL. I'm so glad I didn't live in the south back in the 50's and 60's because I don't think I would've lived long. Whites were so evil towards blacks back then. Darius McCrary who played Eddie Winslow on Family Matters tv show was in this as a youngster.

Funny thing is the man making the speech during this trailer, railing against Jews and any other non Anglo-Saxon is Jewish actor Stephen Tobolowsky.
