Description In a rare and refreshing reversal of roles, filmmakers put the powerful Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA for short) under the microscope for inspection in Academy Award-nominated director Kirby Dick's incisive look at stateside cinema's most notorious non-censoring censors. Compelled by the staggering amount of power that the MPAA ratings board wields, the filmmaker seeks out the true identities of the anonymous elite who control what films make it to the multiplex. He even goes so far as to hire a private investigator to stake out MPAA headquarters and expose Hollywood's best-kept secret. Along the way, Dick speaks with numerous filmmakers whose careers have been affected by the seemingly random and sexual-content obsessed judgments of the MPAA, including John Waters, Mary Harron, Darren Aronofsky, Kevin Smith, Matt Stone, and Atom Egoyan.

"Violence is fine, Sex isn't", and we wonder why kids grow up to be fucked up.

"Violence is fine, sex isn't." Isn't that b/c violence often involves death, which is inevitable for everyone? Whether you die in your sleep or get tortured to death, the end result is the same regardless. If you really think about it, you can't escape death, but you can escape sex. Death is mandatory, sex is not.

In the film "Knowing" it's rated Pg-13 For Disaster Sequences, Disturbing Images and Brief Strong Language...when in actuality there's no language in this film..not even the f word which qualifies a film to have strong language

It's not about what kids can see, it's about the fact that a PG-13 movie can make a hell of a lot more than a rated R movie. That's really key for the studios and filmmakers.

Quite ironic when I can't watch this trailer unless it's viewed on Youtube (tried watching a link off youtube and it said 'must be viewed on youtube')

Censors of every variety are moral swill. They deserve imprisonment until death.

What's ironic is this film is rated NC-17
  • COLovesYou1 2014-06-23 06:11:14
If parents are so worried about what their kids watch then they should screen the movie first whether its rated NC-17 or rated G... the rating system is the easy way out for parents, it provides them an excuse not to show their child or movie, or something to blame other than themselves when a G rated flick has a dirty word in it.  Rating systems are degrading and demolishing the personal freedoms of filmmakers as well.

I never cared about movie rating in movies. Only the story and how it's put out.

    0:50 and a private dick? Wtf? :D
  • Julia Roberts 2014-05-09 12:01:15
Mean Girls has the same rating as The Lovely Bones. The Lovely Bones is about rape and murder, Mean Girls is a high school comedy.
