Sehr guter deutscher Gay-Kurzfilm. Schade, das man da keinen abendfüllenden Spielfilm draus gemacht hat.

I was enjoying this film right up until the bullshit ending! Marcos and Johannes made such a sweet couple. While it is true not all love stories end happily, it does not mean every single LGBT film has to have a doom and gloom or shitty ending (which a number do not). Makes me wonder what the hell is going on in the minds of screen writers and directors nowadays. What Marcos did to that girl was sick and really uncalled for. What a fucked up way to ruin an intimate relationship!

My interpretation of this fine film after several more viewings: Two boys, Johannes and Marko, close companions, spend time together. Their larrikin behaviour enables them to test their strength and fitness against each other, and to engage in intimate contact. Director Kruger gives us enough information to know they have sex with each other, even though we don’t see it on film. After one of these sexual moments, we have brief front-on shots of the boys’ faces as they sit in the bath: Johannes’ face wears the smile of post-coital happiness but Marko’s face is impassive, almost bored, dissatisfied. He is to repeat the look at the film’s end where all the earlier scenes of Marko’s aggressive pranks and play wrestling is revealed as the early expressions of a developing sadistic personality. Marko is unsocial; he stays by himself while it is Johannes who goes and talks to friends in the park. He is unashamed about his behaviour; Johannes on the other hand apologises to his mother for locking the bathroom door. When he races Johannes and is losing, he would rather pull Johannes down to the ground than compete fairly. Marko doesn’t say much, so every line of his dialogue is meaningful. When he does speak, it is to make up a farcical game of counting droplets that only Marko can win. It is this same scene, in the leaky barn or warehouse, that Director Kruger inserts the reference to anti-semitism, which chillingly links the story of young boys discovering themselves to the much darker subject of Germany’s 20th century history. And to punctuate the hint, when Marko pushes the girl over in the final scene, she falls adjacent to a train rail. (The Jewish catastrophe was made possible by mass transportation on the rail system.) Johannes bears witness to Marko’s depravity, after which the boys look silently at each other - west v east, present v past, good v evil. But here, unlike past German history, Johannes rejects what he sees, and walks away.

First young Love is a battle in itself. First Gay young Love is almost impossible emotionally. So trick a girl into hanging out with you and your mate and piss on her? What was the point? You just lost your first. Walk on Dear Lad and Don't look back!
