Beautifully sad. Poignant. What a horrible father she had; what a horrible 'lover' also. She was so much better than both of them; neither deserved her.

Unfortunately that's the way it was - marriage in this case was not about love and happiness, it was about a fortunate match, especially where the father was concerned.

In the end she ended up exactly as her Father said he saw her being after he was gone. In a sun filled parlor. Her father was a tyrant and wanted no happiness for her,

Oh I hate the father! He took his wife and son's death out on Catherine. He was so demeaning and controlling. He thought that she wasn't good enough for anyone but someone who would marry her in her old age for her money. Catherine is a amazing person! Maurice was thinking right when he first said that she was good, pure and delightful. He messed up thinking that she couldn't make her own decisions or be responsible for their consequences. In summary: HATE THE FATHER Maurice is . . . mmm

This is a very sad and disturbing story of a woman whose father abused her.  I don't think of it in an romantic terms, like showing her dignity or character.  I feel she was robbed of love and even of her rightful inheritance by a father who wanted to possess her for himself.  The truth came out when they were standing on the mountain together...he blamed her for his wife's death and his cruelty set terrible limits on her life.  While I find the story's complexity intriguing...I wonder at the author's attempt to show that everything is okay in the end...when in fact, it is not.  An earlier version of this movie ended in a much more interesting way...with Catherine setting up a tryst as though she wanted her lover back and then refusing to open the door to him...the movie ended with her smiling as he screamed her name at the door.  It was as though she had finally returned some of the cruelty that had been done to her.  I found that ending to be more in line with the lessons she had learned from living with a cruel father all of those years.

no offense but I do find her decision stupid. how can you punish your own self and deprive yourself from happiness because of one person. I don't see the problem with the father he was right and that stupid guy won as he managed to turn her into a sad spinster

This movie reminds me of the movie 'The Heiress' with Olivia De Havilland. Is this a remake? Good movie. Thank you for sharing

    Strangers on a Train (1951)

Bruno Anthony thinks he has the perfect plot to rid himself of his hated father and when he meets tennis player Guy Haines on a train, he thinks he's found the partner he needs to pull it off. His plan is relatively simple. Two strangers each agree to kill someone the other person wants disposed of. For example, Guy could kill his father and he could get rid of Guy's wife Miriam, freeing him to marry Anne Morton, the beautiful daughter of a U.S. Senator. Guy dismisses it all out of hand but...
