The plot twist is that in traditional Chinese opera, the part of the female is actually played by males, so the French ambassador's lover was actually a guy the whole time. The Chinese government had actually told the opera singer to maintain a romantic relationship with the ambassador for espionage, reminding you that this occurred in communist 1960s China. The relationship lasted 20 years. In the end the ambassador decided to commit suicide while dressed as the opera singer's character, Madame Butterfly, hence the name of the title M. Butterfly. People would think the m stands for madame but it stands for Mr.
