Description Dr. Markway, doing research to prove the existence of ghosts, investigates Hill House, a large, eerie mansion with a lurid history of violent death and insanity. With him are the skeptical young Luke, who stands to inherit the house, the mysterious and clairvoyant Theodora and the insecure Eleanor, whose psychic abilities make her feel somehow attuned to whatever spirits inhabit the old mansion. As time goes by it becomes obvious that they have gotten more than they bargained for as the ghostly presence in the house manifests itself in horrific and deadly ways.

Definitely. I know a lot of people my age (late teens-early twenties) that know and love this movie. We pretty much only found out about it because of the remake that most people hated.

Ugh yes. That movie is terrible but some good came out of that shitty remake. I was only 7 when the remake came out and if it didn't, I would have never watched this version.

i think horror movies can be scarier if their in black and white
  • Leniese92 2013-06-20 15:47:27
The movie is a psychological horror so the fear comes from not seeing what's there as well as trying to figure out what is there and what is in the main character's mind. If only current horror movies did this.

I saw this film as a youngster in the mid 60's. It was utterly horrifying, especially when the professor spoke about the history of the house. The lady with the rope on the tray and dangling feet really frightened me. This is in my top ten best horror movies ever.

Need your age because some of the recommendations by frightism might be too scary if you're under 8. I agree that "The Innocents" is probably a good one. If you think you'd like science fiction, try The Day the Earth Stood Still (the black and white) or "Forbidden Planet". It's probably best to begin with '50's horror CLASSICS. Hope this helps.

Great atmospheric horror story! Scared me & my brother like crazy when we were kids! Turn out the lights, light candles, etc., etc., it's great fun to watch like that. One of the Best horror movies ever!

"The Haunting" a black and white movie. Scary haunted house movie!
  • materialgirl8707 2013-02-03 08:57:06
The haunting music they used in this movie was stunning! Even if you didn't see the spirits, the music made you know that the spirits were there. Believe me, if you didn't believe in ghosts before...once you see this movie, mark my words-YOU WILL BELIEVE IN THEM FROM NOW ON!!!!

This movie scared the fuck out of me the very first time I watched this! The pounding scenes especially when Eleanor thought Theo was the one holding her hand but really wasn't, made me think someone I couldn't see was in the living room with me, possibly standing in front of me or sitting next to me. After the movie was done I ran like the wind to my parents room and slept with them for 2 nights...and that was Halloween '05 when I was 18!!!!!

Amen!! The remake was fucking horrible!! The classic was a masterpiece. Scared the bejesus out of me the very first time I watched it 8 years ago Halloween!!!!!

Shy and withdrawn, Nathan (played by Stephan Bender) is new to his school, unusually smart (a grade ahead) and the silent tension at home nearly unbearable. Mom, Dad, and Nathan have moved constantly, town after town, landing, inexplicably, in god-fearing "St. Francesville". Roy (played by the multi-talented Max Roeg), a year older than Nathan, confident and hard-working, drives the bus to their school while a friendship blooms between them into a relationship that is fraught with confusion and...
