Description Dr. Markway, doing research to prove the existence of ghosts, investigates Hill House, a large, eerie mansion with a lurid history of violent death and insanity. With him are the skeptical young Luke, who stands to inherit the house, the mysterious and clairvoyant Theodora and the insecure Eleanor, whose psychic abilities make her feel somehow attuned to whatever spirits inhabit the old mansion. As time goes by it becomes obvious that they have gotten more than they bargained for as the ghostly presence in the house manifests itself in horrific and deadly ways.

Richard Johnson who played the role of Dr. John Markway,  was at one time considered for the role of James Bond. Johnson declined the role and later said that he thought Sean Connery made a much better Bond that he would have.

"The Haunting," based on the Gothic horror classic, "The Haunting of Hill House," is simply the greatest single ghost movie of all time... period.  This is due to three things:  Story, casting, and the inspired direction of the great Robert Wise, who "wisely" decided to shoot the film in B&W as opposed to the more popular, color.  Along with the incredible cinematography, it lended a spooky atmosphere to the picture that really made it stand out from the masses.  But if your'e looking for a frightening, blood dripping ghost, you won't.  You don't actually see a thing, which makes this movie such an enduring masterpiece of supernatural terror.

I'm not saying that this is a bad movie, but it might be just a little overrated.

Saw this lastnight at AFI Silver Theater (outside Wash. DC) lastnight. Hadn't seen this in many years, but if you ever get the chance, see it in a real theater on a full size screen, where you can really see the excellent cinematography on full display. Forgot how truly creepy/frightening this is.

I finally just watched this film for the first time!! CREEPY and well-done classic it was! It was much better than the modern version with Liam Neeson. I always knew Eleanor was the central character in both films, but I liked how this 1963 version involved the other 3 lead characters more than in the 1999 version. I felt chills throughout my body, during multiple moments in the film. CHECK IT OUT :)

An awesome movie. One of the scarier scenes: when Eleanor thinks she is holding tight to Theodora's hand during violent ghostly pounding and wakes to find she is across the room - "Whose hand was I holding?" Sent chills through me. No blood & gore just good sound effects and imagination. Take a hint Hollywood.
