Description Dr. Markway, doing research to prove the existence of ghosts, investigates Hill House, a large, eerie mansion with a lurid history of violent death and insanity. With him are the skeptical young Luke, who stands to inherit the house, the mysterious and clairvoyant Theodora and the insecure Eleanor, whose psychic abilities make her feel somehow attuned to whatever spirits inhabit the old mansion. As time goes by it becomes obvious that they have gotten more than they bargained for as the ghostly presence in the house manifests itself in horrific and deadly ways.

The opening paragraph of "The Haunting": "No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for 80 years and might stand for 80 more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone." (from "The Haunting of Hill House," novel by Shirley Jackson, published in 1959)

Robert Wise edited for Orson Welles. There are little dedications to Kane in the way this was filmed. It really behaves more like a Welles film....almost anything black and white made during this time was meant to scare you...and if you were 13 years old, it succeeded.

A true classic ghost story.  I grew up in a house that was haunted by a female spirit and demons, so I can tell you that this stuff is REAL.  I viewed this film as a child with my mom, and we already knew what was in store, although, as my mom said, "It is the living that can harm you, not the dead." The dead can scare the shit out of you, if you are weak minded and have no faith in God.  I still love a good ghost story!

This remains one of the biggest movie experiences of my life. I saw this, alone, late one new years eve when I was eleven or twelve in the early 80s. I still get goosebumps thinking of some of the scenes. Especially the Door Scene in the parlor. It took a few seconds before I realized what was going on and when I did, good grief, I shat myself. Awesome movie. Too bad they botched the remake.

Saw this when I was a kid in the mid 1960's when it was shown on TV. Yep, good old B/W days and it scared me to death. I read the original Shirley Jackson book "The Haunting of Hill House" and it was terrific. Ms Jackson's other works are worth reading if you haven't ever done so. Her short story "The Lottery" will make you think twice before ever choosing lots with a group if people.     The approaching of the carriage in the beginning always comes to mind when I drive from the Gatehouse at the Biltmore estate in Asheville, NC. As it gives nearly the same impression and one wonders how the Vanderbilt's felt driving it in carriages back in 1896.

"Whose hand was I holding?"  That gave me the chills!!!!!

The house itself is a character in the movie.  No blood or gore, but a lot of psychology and just plain creepiness.

One of the spookiest films I have ever watched...its all in the suggestion...none of this CGI/special effects nonsense...

23 dipshits want a weak "Paranormal Activity" movie, apparently. This is one of those rare movies that still has the solid ability to frighten despite its vintage. Robert Wise was a genius. But most people born after, oh, about 1990 won't give it a chance because "Like, oh my god, its in black and white and [blah blah blah] its old!"

The "watch this movie on YouTube" link, that shows in the vid, links to the vastly-inferior 1999 remake, and not the version of this trailer.

I hate the way they make Eleanor and Dr Montague have a romance.

I've been listening to "Astro Creep 2000" by White Zombie lately. It features a voice clip from "The Haunting."
