Thankyou so much. A beautiful film. I love this movie so much, and and I had no idea they ever made a movie about the childrens crusade. I'd heard about it and read about it in my history studies, and not many people I have found know about it. They know about all of the other crusades but often not about this one. It's not even included in the historical listing of crusades, these children are most often forgotten about. Yet we should perhaps remember them more, for the very fact that they were children, doing something for god. What is really sad is that our historical records show that many of the children died along the way from the heat and from starvation, and thirst. Of those who did not die, most of them were taken and sold into slavery, it is not known if any did survive and or make it to the holy land but if any had their number would have likely been few. These children were brave, how many of our younger generation today would do what they did let alone do it for god? I do wonder. Perhaps these children of god, so devoted to his cause, despite the sins of some of the older ones their hearts were in the right place, and their minds were on god, they wanted to please him. Perhaps in a way these innocent children of god, were Martyres, and just maybe in the eyes of the lord they were, So many young innocent lives lost. It was also written that the reason this crusade started was because the innocent child may be able to and to succeed where the grown ups could not and had not been able to do. God Bless.

I think that at the heart of this movie is a somewhat pessimistic statement, both by Wajda, the director, and Andrzejewski, the author of the novel this film is based on, that virtually all endeavors, including spiritual ones, are at their roots sexual or otherwise base. Very interesting topic, designed to question one's motives in life, but I feel better suited to theater than a film, if it had to be made into a media different than a novel. These kids are wandering though what seems like the very same barren landscape throughout the movie, and so watching it becomes rather tedious, save for the flashbacks that expose everyone's motives for participating in the Crusade.

Truth kills hope, not lie. Monk says this. All of the best Wajda films -from “Kanal” to “Katyn”- have to do with broken ideals and disappointment. Wajda has really bad films, like “Danton” or “Man of iron” or “The possessed”, but he made great masterpieces too, like “The birch wood”, “Landscape after the battle”, “The wedding”, “The promised land”, “The shadow line”, and so on. I think “Gates of Paradise” is an excellent minor film, a little below his great epics. Thank you, Eddie.

Is this the only reason some of you watched this movie?! Simply because Jenny Agutter was in it? A Knight of the Crusades wants to make amends for his 'sins'. What causes so much problems with the story line is that true christians know that deeds alone will not bring salvation which is one of the reasons people find this movie 'weird'. The story line get away from them. I watched it with an open mind; I give it a C-.
