Description This is the story of the first years of the AIDS epidemic in the United States and focuses on three key elements. Dr. Don Francis, an immunologist with experience in eradicating smallpox and containing the Ebola virus, joins the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to try and understand just what this disease is. They also have deal with bureaucracy and a government that doesn't seem to care. The gay community in San Francisco is divided on the nature of the disease but also what should be done about it. Finally, the film deals with the rivalry between Dr. Robert Gallo, the American virologist who previously discovered the first retrovirus and his French counterpart at the Pasteur Institute, Dr. Luc Montagnier, that led to disputed claims about who was first to identify the AIDS virus.

Am a right-wing Christian Fundamentalist. Not too keen on homosexual lifestyles, even less keen on the diseases caused by AIDS. As of today, from what I "hear" more than 25% of the adult males in Africa are carrying this syndrome. Don't have any other stats handy. It isn't under control. It has just been isolated... is detectable. I understand that when the syndrome develops into HIV many people are living longer. There are very few things in this world I am qualified to call insidious (that's very bad). Am glad that the infrastructure is fairly well developed, at least in the West, to help folks that are ill. There should be no sterotyping when it comes to helping people that are ill. Unless I mis-understand the Bible, God loves "all" men. EDit: from what I understand, the disease just hit the homosexual community, "first."

The Crisis continues. I've lost two dear friends over the years to the AIDS and I've got a few others who are fighting the disease to this day. While treatments have come a long way, it is a flawed assumption to assume that people do not die of AIDS anymore. I first saw this movie after my friend, Mario died of the disease. I have to say, I am utterly ashamed of my Government. If the resources had been made available sooner, we may have found a cure by now or at least saved tens of millions of lives.

"Dr." Gallo is a total bastard. He was in it for the money. He was a glory hound. He has no business doing anything that requires sound medical judgement, ethics or integrity. I lost a very dear friend of mine to AIDS. James Weibe was not only a friend, but an inspiration. He had a kind heart, a ready smile and always a helping hand. The last time I saw him, I didn't even recognize him at first. He had wasted away to almost nothing. I remember him well, I remember him fondly. The fact that quacks like Gallo screwed so many out of survival just so he could get his name on a paper is the worst kind of atrocity, and he should be remembered in the same light as Josef Mengele. He is everything that is wrong with medicine today. It's not about the glory, discovery or recognition. It's about those who have died, those left behind and those still infected. Let's not lose sight of what we need to do, for whom, and the reasons for it.

Funny how Dr. Gallo is now claiming he invented the AIDS virus. Retro virus is what he discovered but at discovery had no clue about it’s logistics. This is all about one thing and one thing only. MONEY.

So, they mentioned early on that several Haitians in Miami got the virus, and none of them were gay, but no investigation was brought on how they got it..........

1:21:48 Why non-gay people got aids when aids use to be 100% gay disease.

CNN: "THE EIGHTIES" did a segment on "THE FIGHT AGAINST AIDS" in 2016. Haven't see it yet due to annoying 2016 Election interruptions! Fortunately they're re-airing it in early July to view it. Looking forward to see their version of the AIDS epidemic of the 80's decade.
