Description This is the story of the first years of the AIDS epidemic in the United States and focuses on three key elements. Dr. Don Francis, an immunologist with experience in eradicating smallpox and containing the Ebola virus, joins the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to try and understand just what this disease is. They also have deal with bureaucracy and a government that doesn't seem to care. The gay community in San Francisco is divided on the nature of the disease but also what should be done about it. Finally, the film deals with the rivalry between Dr. Robert Gallo, the American virologist who previously discovered the first retrovirus and his French counterpart at the Pasteur Institute, Dr. Luc Montagnier, that led to disputed claims about who was first to identify the AIDS virus.

This movie always made me angry that there was always so much red tape, political correctness and even more so, a stupid game of who gets credit. They may never have been able to stop the disease in its tracks but they may have been able to raise awareness faster if it hadnt of been for those idiotic self centered idiots like Dr Gallo and the organisations who complained that it would cost their companies money standing in the way of human life.

Americans love a good puritan sex panic story. This movie propaganda is a complete fabrication and fable. There is no more truth here than the numerous typical Hollywood trash movies where the sexless virgins are the only ones to survive the slasher serial killer. Oversexed black Africans having sex with AIDS monkeys? Horny French Canadian loverboys flying around the world spreading AIDS? (He even has "gay" in his name so you know he is guilty, right?) Americans are so stupid that they will believe the worse stereotypes and this piece of rubbish is FULL of crap. Every single person who participated in this truly infantile propaganda should hang their heads in eternal shame.

Other factors included may be virulence of the pathogen, the portals of exit and entry, the course of the disease as well as surveillance. When an outbreak is suspected in an area, the starting point for the investigation usually begins with local health officials. The local health department may request help from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which is the principle tracking agency. The steps in an outbreak investigation are as follows: 1) Prepare for Field Work 2) Establish the Existence of Outbreak 3) Verify the Diagnosis 4) Define and Identify Cases 5) Describe and Orient Data 6) Develop Hypothesis link 7) Evaluate the Hypothesis Refine Hypothesis 9) Implement Control and Prevention Measures 10) Communicate Findings We will look at each one of these steps individually to see how a local health agency would begin to track a potential outbreak, to determine if an outbreak is occurring, the putative causative agent, the potential mode of transmission and to suggest possible prevention measures. The local health department would be the starting point for an investigation. As we examine these steps, I will provide some examples from outbreaks we have discussed in class. In each case, I will try to relate the steps from the Esherichia coli outbreak from bagged spinach we discussed earlier in the year as reported in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly report

"you Doctor why this happen. How is it you don't know" Because big pharma made many mistakes while testing variations of polio vaccines in the heart of Africa in the early 1950s.

Terror, war, pestilence and plague are instruments in the hands of the Almighty. He uses the wicked to destroy the wicked. Nobody is safe when He strikes and He never misses a target. “Shall there be evil in the city, and Yah Veh hath not worked it?” “The wages of sin is death”.

Richard Gere's character is based on choreographer Michael Bennett, who died of AIDS-related lymphoma in 1987. His character's article at 1:11:29 was from "Time" magazine -- they simply replaced Bennett's photo with Gere's. Also, the article listed "A Joyful Noise," which was Bennett's debut as choreographer as well as "Ballroom," his follow-up musical to "A Chorus Line".  Bennett's name can also be seen on the last column of the article. Most likely the musical number being choreographed at 57:53 was based on the song "One Night in Bangkok" from "Chess" (music by Bjorn Ulveaus and Benny Andersson of ABBA, lyrics by Tim Rice). Bennett withdrew from the production in January 1986 due to his health. He died in July the following year.

I fucking HATED the CDC for many years because of this. This movie was a very strong influence on me when I saw it at 16 years old, and it still breaks my heart. My favorite line is at 1:25:06. And just for the record, Dr. Gallo was a freakin' asshole.
